Empowering Your Organization with VPN based Work-From-Home Solutions

The current context of the world or the "New Normal" has led to a new series of business and working practices. Remote working or Work-from-home has become an essential business practice for most of the organizations. Virtual working environments were only required for some special organizations earlier. But, from now on wards it would be an essential every technology based organization. 

However, there are many challenges which are brand-new for most organizations in relation to remote working. Therefore, through this article, we will discuss about VPN or Virtual Private Networks empowering organizations with required privacy and security.



VPN in Businesses

There are two main types of Virtual Private Networks as Consumer VPN and Business VPN. Organizations are using the Business VPN applications for their requirements. Business Application VPNs are Remote access VPNs which can be quite distinguished from personal VPN. 

Usually, a secure internet browsing is facilitated for users by consumer Virtual Private Networks, though which an almost anonymous access to browsing Internet is given. This may remove certain location related restrictions on the Internet, providing access to more content. 

Business applications will be having the same privileges, along with some additional features allowing the users to connect through a more secure and private network to the organizational resources. 

Work-From-Home with a Secure VPN 




Usually, Remote Access Virtual Private Networks provide users who are working from remote locations, a secure private tunnel to access the organizations Local Area Network through the Internet. Simply, these are providing access to computer and other resources located distantly. The level of Access depend on the user permission given from the organization to each user. 

The key question of using these applications would be how to authenticate the actual users. There are various strategies used by organizations in authenticating the users starting from user credentials such as usernames, passwords, user tokens and etc. 




Thereafter, an end-to-end encrypted secure tunnel is created between two ends for the user to safely access organizational resources. VPN usually provides Direct Application Access, eliminating the burden of accessing the whole system. 

Organizational Benefits in using a Secure VPN 

When working from home, it is now essential for an employee to focus on their security as well as protecting the data of the organization. Therefore, a VPN can have a mirage of benefits for the users. 

  •  Well organized Access Levels can be set to keep flow of data within the organization. Thereby, it is easy to control access to private data, minimizing risks of data breaches.          
  • Devices of Employees can be better protected through a proper Virtual Private Network.  When working remotely, users login through public networks such as those of Coffee-shops, or shared home networks etc. Therefore, to prevent any security vulnerabilities (Packet sniffing, Man-in-the-middle attacks etc.), an end-to-end encrypted Virtual Private Network is important.
  • Virtual Private Network facilitates access to most internal systems of the organizational, remotely, thereby making it not mandatory for the employees to  physically be present in the organization.
  •  According to Company Policies, users may be held liable for any data breaches in the organization. When working remotely such vulnerabilities are higher. Therefore, when a Secure VPN is used, the liability of employees can be reduced.

  2. Good read Asenika. You have mentioned about the tunnel mode. Can you please clarify for me the difference between the tunnel mode and the transport mode?

      Yes, of course. In tunnel mode, the original packet is encapsulated in another IP header. ... In transport mode, the IP addresses in the outer header are used to determine the IPsec policy that will be applied to the packet

  3. Hackers could launch DDoS attacks on VPN services and exhaust their resources, crashing the VPN server and limiting its availability. Nowadays this can be a major issue with WFH. What's your opinion on this?

      Yes, it is a real issue, due to increased use of VPN and the WFH solutions. Also, hackers find these VPN tunnels as a new means of data breaching. DDOS attacks on VPN tunnels may affect users to access their resources in the organization. A DDOS attack cannot be actually prevented. But, you can minimize the risks of such an event. A VPN can prevent an attack from doing any real harm to your business. By having remote VPN servers, you protect your actual servers from being attacked.
